Saturday First Eleven Match Report

28 June vs Navestock (away)
Local Derby time and this time Havering swept Navestock aside in this low scoring game at Navestockside.
Winning the toss, Havering skipper John French had no hesitation in asking his neighbours to bat first. Mike Gaudin and Ben Leworthy opened the bowling and after 2 overs, the score was 19 with both Ian Stanley and Richie Barrett hitting out against loose bowling. But that was the last time, as Mike bowled with pace and hostility, and Ben bowled with swing and accuracy.
Ben Leworthy deceived Ian Stanley, who lost his off peg, and Hawtree was quite brilliantly caught at backward short leg by Lee Pottle off Mike Gaudin. (The ball was struck so hard it hit him and he caught the rebound). Ben claimed the dangerous Jason Roberts, caught by Luke Dyerson and when Lee Pottle replaced Mike Gaudin and snapped up J.Hawtree in his 2nd over, caught by Lee Rhodes, Navestock were 45-4 in 20 overs and struggling to get the ball away. Ben bowled his 12 overs straight through for remarkable figures of 2-19 (7 maidens and 8 off the first over!!). Lee Pottle continued with pace and Navetock had no answer as he clean bowled Steve Gawler making it 59-5 Graham Bull hit some good shots but he was undone by Luke Dyerson, who took over from Ben and was just as miserly, finishing with 3-13 off 6. Mike Gaudin returned for one over and finished the innings, bowling veteren John Doughty to leave Havering chasing 93 to win.
After tea, Kevin Thain and Andy Lazenby opened for Havering, but Graham Bull was determined to try and match the pace of Mike Gaudin, and quickly had Kevin caught by brother Colin Bull for 4. But Andy and Skipper John French got their heads down and did what the Navestock batters seem unable to, they picked off the bad balls and defended the good ones, even allowing the ball to hit them with the invariable bounce. Graham Bull bowled with pace and hostility but could not get through the pair. It took Jason Roberts, bowling his off-spin, to get through Lazenby, who missed a slog-sweep to be bowled for 31 with Havering half way home on 47. John French and Danny Beechey continued the good work, hitting bad balls for 4 to get Havering within reach of sucess on 81 before Danny skied a big shot to be caught by Hawtree off the bowling of A.Mills. It was left to the skipper to score the winning runs as Havering won by 7 wkts in 20 overs.
Havering 26 points, Navestock 1 point
Havering have now consolidated their position in the top half of the League.

21 June vs South Woodham Ferrers (home)
Havering stemmed the flow of defeats by claiming an emphatic victory over South Woodham Ferrers at Broxhill Road. Put in on a damp wicket, openers Andrew Lazenby and Kevin Thain put on 118 in 25 overs before Kevin was bowled for 47. Andy Lazenby fell immediately afterwards, plumb LBW for a hard hitting 67 (8x4 & 2x6). John French (11) started to push the pace but was brilliantly caught on the long on boundary having struck the ball which did not go more than 5ft off the ground and would have gone for a flat 6. Danny Beechey (31) struck some sweet shots until he was bowled through the gate, but it was Ben Leworthy who played some unconventional hard-hitting shots, who pushed Havering towards a respectable 234-7. He was eventually caught for 32. Craig Wilkins chipped in with 13.
In reply, SWF started badly with opener Weale getting struck on the thumb of fast bowler Mike Gaudin in the 3rd over. He had to retire hurt. By the time he returned in the 8th over, SWF had lost 2 wickets for 24 as Mike Gaudin was bowling faster and faster and with increased hostility. First, Andy Lazenby took a sharp catch in the gully off Mike Gaudin and then Mark Butler snapped up Webdale caught behind off the bowling of Ben Leworthy. When Weale did return, he didn't last long as Ben Leworthy picked up his second wicket, caught by Lee Pottle, and Danny Beechey had Pritchard snapped up by another top catch in the gully by Andy Lazenby, who was having a good match. That reduced SWF to 38-4 with 15 overs gone, but Rayner was still there, batting at No. 4, and he was starting to open his shoulders. He struck some superb shots to all parts of the ground including 10x4's & 4x6's before he was quite brilliantly caught by Lee Pottle diving at Mid-wicket off Danny Beechey. That made them 113-5 in the 23rd over, still in the hunt. But the remaining batsmen struggled against tight bowling of Luke Dyerson and Lee Pottle and wickets fell regularly. Lee, especially, bowled with hostility and picked up 3 wickets including 2 clean bowled with inswinging yorkers. Dyerson & Gaudin picked up one wicket apiece but were both unlucky not to get more. SWF were all out for 189, 45 runs short with over 5 overs left.
Havering 25 points, SWF 5 points.
Next week, local derby against Navestock who will surely up their game against us.

Saturday Second Eleven Match Report

28 June vs Great Baddow III (home)
Havering 2nds won a close game at home to bottom side Great Baddow by 14 runs. Batting first on a good wicket, the hosts lost Tim Bland for 4, Tim Richardson for 20, Neil keylock for 4 and Dave Joffe for 6 by the time the score had reached 80. But David Keylock was in good form and was joined by Peter Thain as the two put on 124 in quick time. Peter was out for 43 but David Keylock went on to complete a magnificent century eventually holing out for 127. The home side tail wagged well as Scott Jackson 12, Jack Hurley 14 not out and some strong hitting from Steve Summerville 21 took the total to a respectable 269-9 from the 45 overs.
Such a total could have been demanding but the visitors set about their task with some excellent batting that ridculed their lowly position. Five bowlers were used to no effect and with the score on 132-0 after 25 overs, Baddow were looking favourites. Experienced campaigner Steve Summerville though was in irrepressible form as he bowled opener Nuttall for 58 and then had other opener Davine was well caught off a skier by Peter Thain for 66. Visiting skipper Steve Woolf was still in determined mood and hit a fine 51 before Summerville had him brilliantly caught on the boundary by Kevin Stanbridge. Experienced bowler Dave Joffe was called upon to control the last 12 overs and although he finished wicketless his bowling at the death was significant as he proved difficult to get away. However it was Summerville who was the hero finishing with figures of 12-1-58-5. A tight run out also meant the the visitors struggled to keep up with the run rate and they eventually fell short on 255-6 from their 45 overs.
21 June vs Marconi (away)
Havering 2nds pulled off a great win over league leaders Marconi in a tight game. Electing to bat, the home team made fortunate progress against the opening attack of Dave Joffe, Tom Moffat and Jack Houghton. But when Kevin Stanbridge and Peter Thain came on, the runs slowed down and wickets began to fall. Dangerous opener Bilal had riden his luck but was well caught by Tom Moffat on the boundary of Peter Thain's clever leg spin for 62. Skipper Dave Chidley was well caught by Neil Keylock off Kevin Stanbridge for 57 with their score at 148. Thereafter, Marconi struggled to get the run rate back up and lost wickets to a combination of good catching and clever bowling. Peter Thain had the dangerous Affa stumped by Tim Richardson for a meagre 9, and then Tom Moffat returned to clean up the tail. Tom finished with 7-2-22-3, Jack Houghton 8-0-47-1 but it was Kevin Stanbridge 12-1-33-2 and Peter Thain 12-0-65-3 who did the damage resticting Marconi to 209-9 from their 45 overs.
Havering's brittle batting looked like it was going to run true to form when opener Dave Joffe was out for 7, but Tim Bland and Neil Keylock took the score to 62 before Tim was out for 26. Jack Hurley arrived with orders to push it along, and he and Neil Keylock put on 50 before he was run out for 12. Tim Hills was well caught on the boundary for 5, Colin Burton miss hit and was caught for 8 and when Tim Richardson was bowled for 2, and familiar pattern was repeating itself as they had slumped to 134 for 6. Enter Peter Thain who with Neil Keylock put on 31 before Neil was spectacularly caught for a patient 61. Peter Thain had worked out that the only way to score quickly on a ground with long and sandy outfield was to hit sixes which he proceeded to do with aplomb. Joine
d by Kevin Stanbridge with 50 still needed off 6 overs, Peter Thain completed a majestic 51 not out including 4 sixes, three of them in one over off Childey that went for 21. Kevin Stanbridge who was playing with an injured hand announced himself with a 6 off the hapless Childey to finish not out on 16 as the visitors cantered to a win with 2 overs to spare, Peter Thain hitting a four to win the game, complete his 50 and seal a strong individual performance.

Craig Wilkins opening the bowling made an early break through to dismiss Baker for 17 before Cohen and Hymas steadied the ship for Grays. A brilliant direct hit from Luke Dyerson dismissed Cohen for 42 to leave Grays two down, but then the runs continued to flow through Hymas and Canavon. Andy Lazenby made the break through to dismiss Hymas for 61 but Canavon and skipper Leslie continued to play his shots before the returning Wilkins picked up the wicket of Leslie thanks to a sharp catch by Lee Rhodes on the long on boundary. Skipper Lee Rhodes then joined Scott and the 2 put on a stand of 77 before Rhodes fell for 37 trying to push the score along as they started to fall behind the run rate. More quick runs followed through Chris Cobbing (14) Andrew Lazenby (22) Craig Wilkins (32) and not even Scott Jackson's first adult 50 could get Havering to their target as they fell just short on 226 all out

A stand of 64 for the 4th wicket between Umer and Saqib moved the score to 95 in the 17th over before Danny Beechey held a catch off the bowling of Andy Mortimer and then the carnage began. Umer & Babar proceeded to club 182 in 23 over's as the ball disappeared to all parts with no fewer then 6 balls being lost in the surrounding fields. Opener Umer finished unbeaten in 117 (18 x 4 & 2 X 6) and never really looked in trouble and Babar who run himself out on 99 going for his 100 on the last ball of the innings, no fewer than 70 of his runs were scored in boundaries (10 x 4's & 5 x 6's) as Titans amassed 277-5 off of their 40 over allocation. Wicket takers for Havering were Craig Wilkins 8-0-35-1, Tom Moffat 8-1-37-1 and Andy Mortimer 8-1-52-1.

Andy Lazenby then joined Lee Rhodes and blasted a quick fire 35 before being caught as the two put on 48. Mark Chinnery then joined Lee and another 40 stand as Havering were still in the hunt. In the pursuit of quick runs batsman perished around Lee Rhodes who batted for just under 2 hours for 55 and Havering were all out in the last over for 209 to lose by 69 runs. 15 June vs Chelmsford (away) U16 Matchplay.
Havering with only 10 men won the toss & put Chelmsford in to bat. After a good opening stand of 77 Jack Hurley was the 1st to strike, ending up with figures of 3 for 40. He was well supported by Tom Hine who took 2 for 42. Most economical was Ryan Hurley who bowled 6 overs of spin for 16 runs & 1 wicket. Both Ryan Hurley & Tom Hobborough held onto fine diving catches.
In reply, Havering lost early wickets. Skipper Jack Hurley came to the wicket in the 4th over & batted through to the 37th over for a fine hard worked 54 which inc 3 fours (which were all scored in his 1st 4 scoring shots). Three other batsmen got into double figures. Whilst it was always going to be an uphill task with only 10 men, the team battled superbly throughout & their heads never went down. They finished on 131-8 and should all be proud of themselves.
Chelmsford 211 for 7 off 40 overs beat HABCC 131 for 8 off 40 overs by 80 runs.

15 June u-13 Havering League home to Hornchurch Athletic.
Hornchurch Athletic won the toss & elected to bat. Of the 5 wickets to fall, 3 were taken by Bradley Tollon (who also dropped a caught & bowled chance for a hat-trick). The other 2 wickets to fall were run outs and Athletic finshed their 20 overs on 103-5.
Hornchurch Athletic 103 for 5 off 20 overs lost to Havering-Atte-Bower 104 for 2 off 13 overs by 8 wickets.

18 June u-15 Havering League away to Gidea Park.
Gidea Park won the toss & elected to bat first in very overcast conditions. GP openers put on 66 for the opening wicket. Havering then started to gain success at regular intervals. Wicket takers were Tom Hobborough 2 for 24, Adam Winder 1 for 9, Ryan Hurley 1 for 4 & George Prendergast 2 for 11.
Havering started their batting at 7.45pm & it was questionnable as to whether the game would be completed due to the fading light. However against all odds Havering did it & won the game. This was mainly due to a splendid 52 retired not out by skipper Jack Houghton. George Prendergast & Matthew Lavender saw Havering home in the last over with some resolute batting against pace bowling in fading light just before 9pm. This was a cracking team effort & well deserved.
GP 116 for 6 of 20 overs lost to HABCC 118 for 5 off 19.2 overs.
