Saturday 1st XI Match Reports & Scorecards

Sat 1st XI vs Boreham - 3rd September

Havering travelled to mid table Boreham knowing that maximum points were a must in order to mount a challenge. Stand in Skipper Luke Dyerson won the toss and made a brave call of inserting the home side on a beautiful sunny day. It proved to be a fantastic decision, Mike Richardson stepped into Ben Leworthys shoes and bowled extremely well, Scott Jackson was at his brutal best and Andrew Mitcheson proved to be an excellent find. Boreham were bowled all out for 95. Jackson 3-2, Mitcheson 3-11, Richardson 2-29. There was also a wicket for young Mike Roe on his first team league debut.
In response, Scott Jackson and Anthony Downes made short work of Boreham, putting on 42 for the first wicket when Downes was bowled for 19. Mebs Raja joined Scott and they showed their class annihilating Boreham to knock the total off from just 11 overs. Jackson finished unbeaten on 50 from 32 balls hitting his last 3 balls for 4-4-6.
Havering won by 9 Wkts >br> Havering 26 points Boreham 0 points
Havering had done all they could, sadly Hanningfield limped over the line losing 5 wickets chasing just 85 and Rayleigh Fairview cruising to victory to become champions. Havering finished 6 points behind second place in third position. A little bit more luck in crucial situations and better weather Havering would have gained promotion. However a fantastic year for Havering considering the main bulk of the team had a number of new arrivals.

Sat 1st XI vs East Hanningfield & Gt Burstead - 25th August

Third placed Havering entertained top of the table East Hanningfield & Great Burstead. The visitors won the toss following a rain delay that delayed the game by 50 minutes. Havering were asked to bat first in a 37 over game. A solid start from Daniel Beechey (22) and Scott Jackson (18) of 53 gave Havering a good start. A couple of wickets fell before Reece Beechey and Mebs Raja (15) played sensibly and accelerated the score to 97 for 4 just after drinks. Dave Roe (16) joined Reece and they went about a 61 run partnership that created the foundations for a good score. When both fell, Reece for a very well played 53, sensing we were a little short of runs, Mike Richardson went in and caused mayhem, particularly with his destruction of the visitors opening bowler Scott Constable. Richardson hit 20 off one over and was eventually out for 30 from around 10 balls. Ben Leworthy and Luke Dyerson took the home side to an extra point with a solid 14 run partnership to set the visitors 212 to win. Constable took 5 wickets for 86 runs in 12 overs.
A short rain delay at tea threatened proceedings but the ground was just about playable. Havering skipper Ben Leworthy bowled exceptionally well taking the opening 2 wickets with Mitcheson taking another leaving the visitors on 31 for 3 from 13 overs. Sean Bassett (16) and G.Gresty (12) batted solidly for the pending rainfall which duly came with 19 overs on the board. A further delay entailed with the ground every wet. A cracking effort from the Havering players ensured that both captains agreed to re-start, however with players safety a major concern, Bassett slipped over and the captains agreed enough was enough and the match was abandoned due to a wet outfield.
Match Abandoned
Havering 9 points, East Hanningfield & Gt Burstead 9 points
Havering travel to Boreham needing to win well and hope Hockley beat East Hannifield or Pegasus & Corringham II beat Rayleigh Fairview in order for Havering to gain promotion.

Sat 1st XI vs South Woodham Ferrers - 20th August

On the back of 2 straight defeats Havering entertained mid table South Woodham Ferrers. Following a glorious sunny morning Havering won the toss and inserted the opposition. All started perfectly when Skipper Ben Leworthy had both openers back in the hutch inside 2 overs. The clouds came in and the rain came down forcing the players off for 15 minutes. Leworthy struck again but as the rain got heavier, play was suspended again for just under 2 hours. This resulted in a 25 over game. The players returned to fantastic sunshine, stark contrast to 15 minutes earlier. SWF started well after the resumption and were looking at a total in excess of 160, however good bowling from Andrew Mitcheson and Michael Richardson ensured the home side picked up wickets and reduced the visitors to 131 for 8 from 25 overs.
On what could have proved a tricky chase, turned out to be a simple one with the class of Daniel Beechey. After Daniels century at Stock when we were chasing 150, he very nearly did it again. Smashing the ball to all parts of the ground, in particular on the pull and 2 fantastic drives over the bowlers head for 6. Scott Jackson partnered Daniel brilliantly and the pair put on 108 for the first wicket after only 12 overs. A couple of wickets fell but Daniel saw his side home and fell agonisingly short of a well deserved century as his pull shot fell a yard inside the boundary to win Havering the game and put the pressure on the other 2 sides. Daniel finished unbeaten on 99 including 11 fours and 6 sixes facing 56 balls.
Havering won by 8 Wickets.
Havering 21 points SWF 1 point
Havering entertain East Hanningfield next week which will be a cracking game that could decide the promotion places.
There was also a presentation to show Haverings appreciation of our fantastic Scorer Audrey Clay, Audrey is due to have a Hip Operation next week and will miss the end of the season. Audrey was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and we wish her the very best of luck and look forward to having her fighting fit for next season.

Sat 1st XI vs Springfield II - 13th August

Havering travelled to Springfield after losing a few of their regular first team players during the week. Kevin Thain won the toss and elected to field first, Michael Richardson struck a couple of early blows before a solid 74 run partnership threatened to take Springfield to a sizeable total. Havering kept taking wickets and eventually bowled Springfield out for 195. Andrew Mitcheson was the star of the show with 4-48 from 12 overs and Reece Beechey 3-36.
In reply the Havering openers got the visitors off to a flyer and were demolishing the Springfield attack, Daniel Beechey (67) and Scott Jackson (66) put on 128 for the first wicket. Daniel was bowled by a very good yorker first ball following drinks and when Scott was bowled by one that cut back at least 6 inches sadly the floodgates opened. The Havering batsmen were guilty of some rash shots and were dismissed for 166, losing 10 wickets for 38 runs.
Havering lost by 29 Runs.
Havering 6 points, Springfield II 23 points
This leaves Havering 3rd in the table, level on points with Rayleigh Fairview and a point behind new leaders East Hanningfield. Division 3 is wide open with 3 teams fighting for the 2 promotion places.

Sat 1st XI vs Hockley - 6th August

Havering went into the match against Hockley with a make shift team as 6 first team regulars were missing for various reasons. The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl as Havering got off to the worst possible start. Andrew Mitcheson fell almost immediately and was quickly followed by David Keylock. Opener Scott Jackson 61, and Jack Hurley 37, combined well in a partnership yielding 99runs. When Hurley fell, Captain Kevin Thain soon followed and wickets continued to tumble. There was some resistance from Michael Richardson 22n/o late on, as Havering were all out for 197 from 43.2 overs.
Michael Richardson 3-46 was the most successful bowler as he removed the top order. The fielders were not helping the bowlers as catches were put down alongside many miss-fields. Luke Dyerson, Andrew Mitcheson and Scott Jackson claimed a wicket a piece but was not enough as Hockley ran home to victory in the 44.4 overs.
Havering lost by 3 Wickets.

Sat 1st XI vs Rayleigh Fairview - 30 July

Havering travelled to Rayleigh for the biggest game of the season, 1st vs 2nd. Havering won the toss and elected to field first. A minute silence was observed in respect of a young Rayleigh Fairview player who was tragically killed during the week. After a blistering early start from pinch-hitting opener Will Osbourne (24) Havering were soon back in the game with a cracking delivery from Scott Jackson. Ben Leworthy nipped in with 2 wickets before a fantastic spell of fast accurate bowling from Andrew Mitcheson, by far his best performance so far. Mitcheson destroyed the middle order with 4 excellent wickets, Anthony Downes chipped in with another wicket and Luke Dyerson bowled well at the end to wrap up the innings and Havering had rolled Rayleigh Fairview for 91 on a slow hard wicket.
Havering started poorly losing Kevin Thain, the lack of a sight screen being the main cause with 6ft 7in Jamie Lawson bowling out of the trees. Mebs Raja, hero from last week, came to the crease with a defined plan to bash both openers out of the attack, the plan worked until he skied one for 22. Havering still needed 57 for victory. Scott Jackson came and went but Daniel Beechey was batting maturely at the other end, brother Reece joined him and the pair had put on 30 with Reece driving the reasonably quick Lawson for 2 glorious cover drives. When Reece picked Lawson out on the boundary for a cracking catch above his head, David Keylock joined Daniel and the pair put on the remaining 14 runs to win Havering the match. Daniel Beechey finished unbeaten on 39 to lead the side home. Havering needed 22 overs to notch up the maximum points that take them 17 points clear of the chasing pack.
A fantastic team performance from Havering that keeps the dream alive.
Havering won by 6 wickets.
Havering 26 points, Rayleigh Fairview 2 points.

Sat 1st XI vs Stock II - 23rd July

Top of the table Havering entertained fourth placed Stock II. Skipper Ben Leworthy won the toss and had no hesitation in inserting the opposition. Stock started brightly with 14 coming from the first 2 overs, Scott Jackson was the first to find his line and length and picked up a quick brace to leave Stock on 29 for 2. Jackson picked up his third with another cracking delivery. A fighting partnership then pulled Stock back into the game, 69 run partnership between S.Morley (31) and R.Woolgar (41) was broken with the introduction of Luke Dyerson, who got 2 wickets in his first 2 overs, this sandwiched between a perfect delivery from Andrew Mitcheson to leave the visitors reeling on 124 for 6. Stock continued to fight hard and Leworthy returned to mop up the remaining wickets to leave the visitors all out for 197 after 45 overs. A respectable score that would challenge Havering.
A solid opening stand of 37 between Scott Jackson (16) and Daniel Beechey (11) got Havering off to a good start, both batsman clearing the ropes for cracking sixes. However when they both fell and the score on 49 for 2 the hosts were wobbling a touch, a 59 run partnership between Kevin Thain and Mebs Raja helped push Havering along until Thain fell to the bowling of Fielding. The game was in the balance whereby either side could push on for victory, after Reece Beechey avoided a narrow stumping appeal, Havering mounted their charge, both Beechey and Raja played impeccably and at times brutally hammering the bowling into the trees all around the ground. After 34 overs a further 53 was needed at just under 5 runs per over, the sort of chase that can be testing if a wicket were to fall. Cue Raja - Davison had bowled well throughout until Raja took 3 sixes from 9 balls and demoralised the opposition, Havering milked the singles and were sitting on 192 for 3 needing 6 runs to win, Raja cracked a four and the cry from the sidelines was to hit a boundary to secure the extra point, Raja took the challenge on and smashed a straight drive at least 5 trees back at the road end to secure a fantastic victory that puts clear daylight between these 2 sides. Mebs Raja took 85 balls to hit an unbeaten 82 and really looked at his best, 7 fours and 6 sixes showed his class. Young Reece Beechey was not to be undone, a 60 ball unbeaten 51 including 7 fours and 3 sixes was an excellent performance. An unbeaten 94 run partnership in just over an hour.
Havering won by 7 Wickets.
Havering are now 7 points clear of Rayleigh Fairview and 14 points clear of East Hanningfield & Great Burstead.

Sat 1st XI vs Willow Herbs - 9th July

Havering began the second half of the league season top of the table and entertained bottom of the table Willow Herbs. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. Ben Leworthy struck first with a classic in-dipper to bowl the opener. Scott Jackson then removed the other opener to leave the visitors struggling on 20 for 2. A partnership of 85 from B.Davies and M.Davies got Willow Herbs back in the game, however once M.Davies had passed 50 he took a second run to Luke Dyerson that proved fatal, an excellent throw and excellent keeping from Mebs Raja removed Davies and opened the floodgates. Three further wickets fell for 5 runs with Leworthy claiming 2 of them. Another fine run out from Anthony Downes and a poor dropped catch from the skipper that fortunately led to an excellent throw and quick work from Raja to generate another run out. Havering could not not break the last wicket partnership for Willow Herbs to finish on 140 for 9 from 45 overs.
Havering openers destroyed in the Willow Herbs attack with both Daniel Beechey and Scott Jackson batting majestically in a 110 run opening partnership from 18 overs, a couple of wickets fell before Raja came to the crease to face a solitary delivery and caress it through mid on to win the match for Havering. Scott Jackson bowled beautifully without success, Neal Hadcraft (39) and Anthony Harrison (30) were getting Boreham back in the game with a 62 run partnership before Harrison was well caught by Daniel Beechey off Luke Dyerson.
